Occupying Notes
July 25th, 2008
This post deals mainly with:
- colloidal
- republic
I still take notes the older fashioned way (on published press releases of powerpoint lectures, ha!), but my professor posts mp3s of each lecture, overly. Still, I do not consider it’s the like as really travelling to class. But it would do in a touch, if you lost class, etc.
“So do not kvetch, kids. You have it even better than me, and I had got it pretty damn full.“
Bad, gramps. :p
They bring off to dwell a strictly intellectual life, with nothing to do but research the existence of thoughts and drift about depository libraries so Brobdingnagian they’d get Jorge Borges blush.
If I held cognised college life would be like that I would have locomoted.
I established that profs fain notes that resembled a skeleton in the cupboard of their lectures, that lets the pupil to focus on using up notes that ties the material unitedly instead than feverishly racking to scrabble down every news extinct of the professor’s mouth. Counting on downloaded notes without any of your own adds is fundamentally the like as but perusal from the volume with an thought of what the prof believes is most of import.
The best way I set up was to take notes in class; then, the like solar day, transliterate my notes exploitation a manual typewriter. I would supply to the notes, footnote them from the textual matter, etc. Understandably the death of the manual typewriter explicates the downward curve of acquisition in the .
I’m nigh a twelvemonth post-graduation and I already miss the academic life. I unbroken all my books (thanks to the Nucleus it’s an even larger hurting in the buns to locomote). Someday I’ll revisit them and the info I exhausted chocking up will all merely flutter back. Correct me if this is naif; I should cognize nothing in the encephalon “flutters.”
Have you realized any of the public lectures on iTunesU? They have whole free courses from big universities. Only scrolling though the catalogue, I’m like a minor in an MIT-stocked candy store.
I ever compared college to scarper. You can develop yourself and run an endurance contest on your own, but it’s more likely to get through if you have a flight simulator there to maintain you accountable for the piece of work it occupies.
I wo not reason with you that undergrad life has less duties than grad/mental faculty, but I conceive you are immensely hyperbolizing how low-stress it is. As far as schedules, I have never had got a semester without an 8:00 class at least 3 hours a hebdomad, and I oftentimes have laboratory until late on Fri good afternoons. I was on campus for all over twelve 60 minutes every twenty this past hebdomad, betwixt family, research labs, work, and group meetings for organisations. I am not snivelling, because I picked out my major and my actions cognizing it would necessitate work, and I would not be on this way if I made not savor it. Over again, I am not arrogating that the loading is unjust, I would not switch an easygoing major/career way of life even if they nonrecreational me, because that’s not where my passionateness lies. I am a big fan of your blog, but I set up this post more than a small spot arch and frustrative. Only as with anything else, undergrad months are what you get of them, not everyone takes to political party and float their way through, some people do research, go to seminars, work to back up themselves and purchase those USD 120 schoolbooks, etc. Piece I hold that grad school makes affect more acute force per unit area, obligations, and stress in lots of countries, I would believe that some people work harder as undergraduates than others do in grad school, it all calculates on the individual and their specific state of affairs.
To retell I am not complaintive at all about being an undergrad, I concur with you that being at an item in life where the whole purpose is to larn is terrific, and I would not trade these months for anything. I am afraid this reply will be scripted off as simply a fretful nipper laying claim that “I genuinely DO work hard!”, realized as warranting the positions in your post, but that’s not it. I only treasured to come out my head in, because I feel like this post yielded a pretty idealised position, undergraduates do work pretty damn hard (even if it is not the like level as grad school) and we merit a small more credit for our attempts than you demo here!
(By the way, I likewise take my own notes. In family where professors do essay to utilise novel engineering, it is ofttimes a great deal more of a ramification that it’s worth)
I consider there’s an old-fogey (perchance even Luddite) undercurrent to shell out of this comment about the death of note-taking. In my watching of undergraduates today, it’s not so a good deal a dying of *acquisition* as a displacement in wont. Many undergraduates I realise do indeed simply print extinct their professors’ powerpoint slides (that are oft on cancelled)or relisten to talk and then only later on do they get their own notes on the printouts, but that makes not mean they’re not acquisition how to larn as they (simply?) take heed and watch in class.
I would not deride the grandness or genuineness of the auditive fashion. Indeed, as an undergrad in the 80s I held such outrageous script that I held to get myself switch custody to slow down myself down & thus get my penning more legible to myself. Spell I could not *not* take notes (as indeed plenty of kids do not do today), I could really have acquired more extinct of some categories if I held not been squeezing myself to treat what was coming up into my brain by penning my own reactions down right away. Nowadays as a mature (as the euphemism locomotes) graduate pupil who types along to most category, lectures, presentments, I’m still treating in the (old-fashioned?) write-along way, but the deviation for me is that I’m *typewriting* and what I have in the terminal is legible and filled with Uniform resource locators and mental image, to a fault. –Mimo
